The National Gallery of Art is an art museum that Washington DC, can definitely boast of. It has some of the largest assortments of works of art from British, French, Italian and Spanish collections to name a few. As such, the National Gallery of Art has two buildings: the East and West Building.

The design of the West Building is neo-classical. It not only houses beautiful paintings of pre-twentieth century but also has a huge collection of attractive sculptures. Artworks by all time famous artists like Da Vinci, Raphael, Monet, Titian etc. have been kept for display. Works of European masters as well as American artists exhibited here are worth applauding.

On the other hand, the design of East Building stays ascetically modern. It more so focuses on contemporary and modern art. It has put on display some nice works by popular artists like Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and many other artists.

These two buildings are adjoining each other and are linked by an underground spacious tunnel called “the Concourse”. Both these structures are very different in their styles, and with so many artworks on display, one may actually take a whole day to complete the visit.

Apart from appealing to the tourist eye, the museum also has some more services to offer. Ample dining options are available to those who visit the museum. There are restaurants to serve your taste buds along with some cafes and coffee bars. One can also visit the book store or buy some gift items from the children’s shop.

Besides, it has many ongoing programs that include family concerts, teen studios, family workshops, storytelling programs and the like. In addition to this, it also conducts film programs for teens and children. The aim of such program is to foster in children an understanding that films are also an art form.

On the whole, the museum attracts many tourists throughout because apart from paintings and sculptures, it also has on display a wide range of other world-class masterpieces. These include drawings, photographs, decorative arts, prints etc. dating back to the 13th century. So basically if you are an art connoisseur, then you must make a stop at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Even if you are not, the place is certainly worth visiting for all age groups.
